In September 2013, TEDxMaastricht took the show on the road — or more literally — the rails. Sixteen speakers gave mini talks on a round-trip train ride from Maastricht to Amsterdam, flipping the idea of the “quiet car” into the “conversation car.”
Dubbed the TEDxMaastrict BrainTrain, the experiment turned train travel into a learning experience, transforming the last coach of an intercity train into an incubator for new ideas, collaborative projects, and stimulating conversation.
Speakers covered topics like urban design, technology for skin cancer screening, food waste, amongst many other things, all in the space between stations.
“Nowadays people are constantly looking at their phone,” says TEDxMaastricht organizer Jan Scheele. “With this event, we wanted to stimulate discussions and conversations again at unexpected places.”
