TEDxBlackRockCity is the first and only TEDx event to takes place at the famed Burning Man festival. This year, they held their fifth event, themed “Through the Looking Glass.” TEDxBlackRockCity 2015 featured a diverse line-up of speakers and a volunteer team from all over the world, including TEDx’ers from TEDxShanghai, TEDxVancouver, TEDxVail, TEDxStockholm, TEDxTokyo, TEDxMorelia,TEDxSanMigueldeAllende and others.
Speakers included Harley K. Dubois, co-founder of Burning Man, who spoke on female leadership at the event; John Hardy, TED speaker and co-founder of the Green School in Bali; and Favianna Rodriquez, an artist whose work focuses on tackling issues like climate change, migration, and sexual empowerment for women of color, says licensee Klaudia Oliver.
The event took place at the Burning Man camp called Play)A(Skool, which is dedicated to education at Burning Man, says Oliver. Despite a huge dust storm on the day of the event, TEDx’ers filled up the dome (with a line forming to get in), says volunteer Lauren Cucinotta, and hundreds of others listened to the talks outside via audio feed.
“More than ever I feel that the innovation and uniqueness that Burning Man offers makes TEDxBlackRockCity an important event,” says Oliver, and that uniqueness shines in the event’s ever-evolving design. Below, a selection of images from TEDxBlackRockCity 2015, taken by photographer Kelly Page:
