How did TEDxVicenza tie technology, the passage of seasons, their event theme, and the culture of their city together to end their event? With lasers and maps. To close out the 2015 event, the organizing team mapped the interior of their 435-year-old venue — the Teatro Olimpico — with 3D mapping technology; saved these maps; then projected a light show onto the theater’s façade with lasers.
“This was the first time ever that the theater was 3D scanned,” says organizer Benedetta Piva, “and we decided to donate the 3D mapping files to the city of Vicenza, so that they can be used freely by others in the future.”
Paired with this project was the end-of-event light show, which — with its images of trees, plants, switches from light to dark and embrace of Renaissance architecture — highlighted both the city of Vicenza and the TEDxVicenza 2015 theme, “Planting The Seeds,” says Piva. The show tells a story of “the cyclical nature of development and innovation,” says Piva, “… the awareness and significance of the past for progress into the future.”
