Stephen M. Sano is a professor at Stanford University and a master of the Hawaiian slack key guitar. At TEDxStanford, he shows off his guitar prowess, playing songs from his album “Songs from the Taro Patch.”

2. Contemporary koto music at TEDxKyoto


Tokyo-born Aya Asakura began playing the koto at age six, studying with famed composer Miyashita Shuretsu. At TEDxKyoto, Asakura reveals her impressive talent for the instrument, which has allowed her to collaborate with the Osaka Symphony Orchestra, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation and more.

3. Music with trash at TEDxGhent


Billed as “the most ecofriendly band in the world,” Belgian-based music group Trashbeatz performs all of their songs on recycled materials, from buckets to barrels to pipes. At TEDxGhent, they show off their handiwork.
