On a sunny day in April, 30 teams of people made their way through the northeastern Italian city of Vicenza, searching for clues planted by the TEDxVicenza team. This was “Caccia al TEDxORO,” a treasure hunt dedicated to uncovering information about the upcoming TEDxVicenza event, its theme and “the hidden gems of Vicenza,” says organizer Benedetta Piva.

“We thought that organizing a game like this would be the best way to make [our whole community] feel included,” says Piva. “From the young professionals to the families with children, from the students to the top managers of the partners of our main event. The treasure hunt is part of an effort to create a real network and creative movement around TEDxVicenza so that TEDxVicenza doesn’t represent just an event that comes to town once a year, but rather an actual project to share ideas beyond the boundaries of the stage.”

The team collaborated with a group that coordinates large-scale scavenger hunts to create the day’s activities. The treasure hunt was organized in downtown Vicenza, so people could walk everywhere and enjoy our beautiful city,” says Piva. “We gave every team 16 clues and there were no fixed paths to follow, meaning that every team was free to start from any clue they wanted to solve first. Each clue had a different score, which was clearly indicated on the answer sheet.

“Clues were specifically designed to engage both adults and kids,” says Piva. The clues consisted of small challenges, like finding the difference between an edited and an unedited photo of a local building or completing a crossword puzzle about Vicenza that pointed to the location of a hidden red X.

The winning team received tickets for the TEDxVicenza event in May, and runners-up received prizes from event partners, including fresh vegetables from an organic farm.

“My favorite moment of the hunt was definitely when people not participating in the hunt stopped us to ask questions about what we were doing and how they could get involved next time,” says Piva. “This gave me a great feeling we are going into the right direction in building a real community around TEDxVicenza!”
